Three Day Weekend!!!

It has now come to an end, and I am getting ready to have a big night of sleep before the inevitable crazy day I’ll have at work tomorrow.

So what did I do this weekend?

I saw three movies, ate some food, played some video games, made a mix CD (twice), read a little, wrote a little, hooked my hacked DVD player into the living room to watch Italian Job (but then never did) . . . anything else? I got measured for a tuxedo for my brother’s wedding, paid $2 a gallon for gas, went to the bathroom a few times, actually bought movie food . . . anything else?

So about the movies:

Daredevil – it was pretty good except for the script and direction. One guy did both, and he sucks. He did Simon Birch and Jack Frost (with Michael Keaton). As Stan Lee would say, nuff said. Ben Affleck was fairly lame, but didn’t kill the movie. It was the total lack of concern for any of the characters or their relationships. Do we care about Matt and Elektra? No, we surely don’t. Only Colin Farrell as Bullseye was cool, and not enough to recommend the movie. They did play the Hulk and X2 trailers, though. Better comic book movies are in our future!!

Chicago – this one (conveniently starting 25 minutes after Daredevil finished) was great. They did a fantastic job of capturing the immediacy of a stage performance with the storytelling style of film. They successfully adapted a stage musical by making look more like a stage musical than anything else. None of the actors here are about to become superstars of musical theater, but everyone is good. Richard Gere is perfect – who would have thought that could happen? If you are not a fan of musicals in general, you may have a hard time getting into the story. But give it a few numbers and you’ll be hooked.

The Recruit – Surprisingly good. Total fluff piece, but the actors mixed well. Al Pacino was defnitely doing “Al Pacino,” but they gave him a good role. He even gets a bizarre psycho monologue at the end! Colin Farrell is quickly becoming the coolest guy out there, and Kat “Bridget” Moynahan, Longmeadow High School Class of ’89 (same as me), was really good. She and Colin Farrell actually had a LOT of scenes together before the sex scene. I was expecting it in the first act and it didn’t happen until the end of the second act. Completely formulaic – a lot of surprised and surprises about the surprises – but fun.
