Stupid Muddy River

May 21, 2003 Leave a comment

I’m listening to Jeff Buckley and wondering why he felt the need to go swimming in a muddy river in Memphis. He could still be around blowing people’s minds.

One night in some year long ago, I am going to guess 1992, but it could have been 1993, my friend Ben and I went to The Middle East in Boston to see 5 bands for 5 bucks. The headliner was Talking to Animals, who Ben liked. It was why he suggested we go. The third of five acts on the bill that night was Jeff Buckley. I had never heard of him, but there was quite a bit of promotional material hanging for his EP Live at Sin-E. Perhaps he was some big deal? Big deal.

I don’t remember much else about that night – I have no idea if I liked any of the other bands. I think Talking to Animals were OK. But Jeff Buckley . . . damn. He was scheduled for about 25 minutes and probably played for an hour. And everyone was completely transfixed. The place was packed, and I figured out later when everyone left that it was packed on his behalf.

And then after one brilliant album and a tour I never saw, he tried to go swimming in Memphis and drowned. At least he didn’t kill himself with drugs or a shotgun.

Avon Walk Excuses

Thanks for all the feedback on the Avon Breast Cancer Walk. I did some more research into it and found out that not only is it a 26 mile walk (gulp), but I need to raise a minimum of $1750 to participate. Also, on their entire website, there is not a single photograph that includes a man making this walk. In a way, I find this intimidating and less than welcoming. I am positive men must do this – why not make it clear to those men that may be considering it? I would think that to walk 26 miles would actually require some amount of training, would it not? It is spread out over two days (with a 39 mile option included). What can be down about the chafing?

It does seem, however, that it is extremely late in the cycle to be joining. From reading the meesage boards it would seem that people have been registered for this since last year, and have been training for months. I will need to consult my personal physical fitness expert about this when he comes to visit this weekend.

Chances are, however, that this will be a goal for 2004.

Up With Down With Love!

You’d have to be a total grump not to enjoy this movie. Ewen McGregor and Renee Zelwegger dance gracefully across the screen in every scene. The movie is wonderfully placed, the sets impeccably designed and perfectly cast. David Hyde Pierce is just great as Ewen McGregor’s friend and editor. He and his counterpart, Sarah Paulson, are the stiff friends to the flowing leads. The dialogue is tremendously witty and the plot incredibly silly. This is a big smile movie from beginning to end.
